LESS LETHAL OPTIONS FOR POLICING IRAQ

While keep­ing the peace in Iraq con­tin­ues to vex American mil­i­tary plan­ners, less-​​lethal, high-​​tech ways of con­trol­ling crowds con­tinue to emerge.
In addi­tion to the meth­ods dis­cussed here before, Jane’s Defence Weekly looks at tech­nolo­gies in the pipeline like:

* The Clear A Space Device, which is sim­il­iar to a “flash-​​bang” grenade, but the effects last up to five min­utes long. It would be used to dis­ori­ent and remove per­son­nel from an enclosed area, like a room or a ship’s hold.
* The Running Gear Entanglement System, which would stop sea ves­sels by entan­gling the pro­pellers.
* Drones car­ry­ing tear gas or mal­odor­ants.
* High-​​powered ver­sions of the tasers cur­rently used by police forces.
