RIDGE: TERROR ALERT SYSTEM NEEDS FIXING

Tom Ridge has finally fig­ured out what we’ve all known for months: that he needs to take his cocka­mamie ter­ror alert sys­tem back to the shop for major repairs.
“We worry about the cred­i­bil­ity of the sys­tem,” Ridge told Reuters. “We want to con­tinue to refine it because we real­ize it has caused some anx­i­ety.“

Ridge said the sys­tem, based on infor­ma­tion from var­i­ous intel­li­gence agen­cies, relies heav­ily on the intel­li­gence that is “fairly generic.“
But as the intel­li­gence related to poten­tial ter­ror attacks becomes more detailed, Ridge expects to have more spe­cific infor­ma­tion that will give the gov­ern­ment flex­i­bil­ity in pre­dict­ing the tar­get of a poten­tial ter­ror attack.
“Hopefully in time we can be much more spe­cific with the alerts so we don’t have to ask com­mu­ni­ties and states to enhance their secu­rity with the accom­pa­ny­ing expense when we really don’t think they have to,” he said.
