ALL-​​SEEING SATELLITES BEGIN TO FOCUS

The Space Based Radar — the Pentagon’s pro­posed series of all-​​seeing satel­lites — is mov­ing for­ward. Raytheon just picked up a $37.4 mil­lion con­tract to build a pre-​​prototype array of sen­sors for the net­work of eyes in the sky, sched­uled for 2012.
The job, to be fin­ished by next September, calls for the devel­op­ment of a unit com­bin­ing cloud-​​piercing ground syn­thetic aper­ture radar, mov­ing tar­get indi­ca­tion, and dig­i­tal ter­rain ele­va­tion data.
Last month, SAIC inked a deal worth up to $139.4 mil­lion for sys­tem inte­gra­tion work on the project.
