RED MARS

The Soviet Union might have been poised to implode in 1989. But that didn’t stop the whiz-​​kids at the CIA from pre­dict­ing that the Evil Empire would “likely” soon be paint­ing the Red Planet, um, Red.
“We believe the Soviets are plan­ning for a manned Mars land­ing mis­sion some time after the year 2000,” reads the CIA’s then-​​secret analy­sis, now de-​​classified.
