HALLIBURTON’S NOT ALONE

Halliburton’s Iraq con­tract shenani­gans aren’t unusual, accord­ing to a watch­dog group. They’re prac­ti­cally built into the way the gov­ern­ment and big com­pa­nies make deals.
“What most peo­ple do not real­ize is that those con­tracts are not anom­alies in fact, they sim­ply reflect the flawed fed­eral con­tract­ing sys­tem that exists today,” the Project on Government Oversight says in a new report, Federal Contracting and Iraq Reconstruction. “Favoritism, waste, abuse, and even fraud are far more likely today because of the sys­temic reduc­tion of over­sight and trans­parency in gov­ern­ment con­tract­ing over the past decade.“
THERE’S MORE: “Amid alle­ga­tions of over­billing by top Iraqi con­trac­tor Halliburton and kick­backs to its employ­ees,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, “senior Defense Department offi­cials vowed yes­ter­day to get tough with the polit­i­cally con­nected conglomerate.”
