LOS ALAMOS WORKERS AXED

“Five employ­ees have been forced out of their jobs at the University of California-​​run Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico fol­low­ing months of scan­dals involv­ing miss­ing com­puter disks and unsafe lab prac­tices,” the San Francisco Chronicle (and oth­ers) report.
Lab offi­cials are still look­ing for two com­puter disks that may con­tain nuclear-​​weapons data. They noticed the disks’ absence July 7.
Since then, offi­cials from Los Alamos, UC, the U.S. Energy Department and the FBI have turned the nuclear weapons lab upside down try­ing to find the disks. The search has been so frus­trat­ing that at one point they spec­u­lated that per­haps the disks never existed in the first place.
