Israeli’s Sonic Blaster

scream.jpgRats. I meant to blog about Israel’s new sonic weapon a week ago, when it first appeared in the local press. Now Drudge, of all people, has beaten me to the punch. Grrrr.

Israel is considering using an unusual new weapon against Jewish settlers who resist this summer’s Gaza Strip evacuation — a device that emits penetrating bursts of sound that leaves targets reeling with dizziness and nausea.
Security forces could employ the weapon to overcome resistance without resorting to force, their paramount aim. But experts warn that the effects of prolonged exposure are unknown.
The army employed the new device, which it dubbed “The Scream,” at a recent violent demonstration by Palestinians and Jewish sympathizers against Israel’s West Bank separation barrier.
Protesters covered their ears and grabbed their heads, overcome by dizziness and nausea, after the vehicle-mounted device began sending out bursts of audible, but not loud, sound at intervals of about 10 seconds. An Associated Press photographer at the scene said that even after he covered his ears, he continued to hear the sound ringing in his head.
A military official said the device emits a special frequency that targets the inner ear. Exposure for several minutes at close range could cause auditory damage, but the noise is too intolerable for people to remain in the area for that long.

THERE’S MORE: As Tamir notes in the comments, Defense Update has a bit more on the blaster.

BBC World Service had an interview or two with witnesses and knowledgable sources this morning. The knowledgeable source spoke of infrasound being dialable from annoying to lethal. It’s unclear to me if “the scream” is infrasound proper or something else — implication of “inner ear” and the name suggest a higher pitch than the infrasound that resonates the internal organs.

It appears from the description and picture in Defense Update that this is a variation on an ultrasonic device ow being marketed to selectively deliver audio in crowded shopping malls. There is little reason it could not also deliver ultrasound. Who owns the technology may be open to debate (and litigation).

We should use this in US Federal prisons & State prisons aside routine Riot control & our forces in Iraq.
Imagine aiming this sonic device at some caves on Iraq/Iran border OR Afgan/Iraq border alone.
    Good test base in Iraq.
One such device can stun 100 inmates alone for security control. NO more prison riots.
Or up the amps & Execute inmates on Death Row.

    Another really, really bad idea.
Being able to just repel people without any risk means that it will become an every day abuse. No more protests, since a simple change in the law to make them illegal without permission will be all that is required now the entire million strong crowd of protesters can be trivially “dispersed”.
A definate boon for dictators, too, since it leaves no marks, but ensures the “masses” no longer get a say, even en mass.
It would be great to end all prison riots forever. You could just kill all the inmates. That would work too. And when the inmates riot because they are being stripped, beaten, tortured and killed extra-legally, there is at least a pair of outside eyes brought in, and perhaps a reform or two.
    No longer.
Being able to abuse and get away with it due to your “magic scream box” must be a dream come true.

The Germans During the Third Reich had a secret weapon called the sound cannon which drove the Russians nuts in the Ural mountains.
Also lets not forget that Admiral Doenitz gave the Prototype to the Americans for the “Flying Wing”(and there is more than one)which is of course the grand-daddy of the U.S. B-2 Bomber. And of course the Jet-engine and so much more.Like Operation Paperclip.

Huray! A peaceful solution. People say it can be abuse, well think of electricity, we abuse that too. Dectators used it as a torture device. Goverments around the world use it to kill, think the chair. I can give many reason that the sonic bomb can be abuse but think also of the benefits. Soldiers, Policemen, Prison guards don’t need to risk their lives to protect your safety. Fathers, Mothers, Son, Dauthers, and Families of the people that protect this country don’t have to grive for the dead. So, I say use the dam thing. If it make the world a peaceful place use it. Just remember its a weapon. Anyone can use it, the good and the bad.

What on earth are you talking about? The Germans never even came CLOSE to the Urals during WWII. The Nazis may have envisioned a “sound cannon,” but it was never deployed.
