If there is anything I've learned from studying about UH-60s is that no one loves those birds more then the chiefs. The crew chiefs are the unappreciated oil that makes everything run smoothly. The history, sheer numbers, varients, service to the military and country is impressive - beyond reproach. The Blackhawk family of aircraft is the only helicopter, like the C-130, to fly in all five branches of the US military. I was a crew chief for a couple of years but I worked and sweated on them birds for 10 yrs. The high pitch whirr you heard was from the main gearbox. The sun gear is about 3.5-4 ft in dia.
