The US military has really never gotten rid of pack animals completely. We used them in WWI (We still had horse cav) WWII in Burma and the Pacific quite a bit, In Nam it was not unusual for SOG and groups with similar missions to us pack animals.
My guess is the Pentigon does not have a problem with the idea of pack animals at all. It’s a long tradition with our military.

But the problem is in afghanistan most people for some odd reason think the country is deserts when it isn’t. It’s nothing but mountains. So to get most suplies up to the op’s or other places it’s either by helo or donkey. They have proven very useful. And it’s a whole lot better then telling your troops hey guys where going to have to spread this stuff out and carry it ourselves. Tell that to a mortar unit that has about 200 rounds that need taken to the top of a mountain that a humvee can’t get too. And the military does offer a course where they teach people how to load donkeys and animals.

The Marines using donkeys instead of Hummers in Afghanistan.
That must be a real kick in the a** over at the Pentagon.
