It’s no secret that one of the keys to any rescue effort is money. And the folks in Louisiana and Mississippi need our help, bad.
So I’m asking Defense Tech readers to come up with five thousand dollars over the next five days to give to the Red Cross or to Mercy Corps. Click here or here to donate.
I’ve just made the first contribution: a thousand dollars, which ain’t easy on a freelance writer’s budget. Now, you guys come up with the other four grand. Once you’ve donated, drop a note in the comments section to say how much you’ve given.
Let’s do this.
THERE’S MORE: You guys rock. As of 11pm on Monday, you’ve given $4605 — $605 more than the goal I set, with a day to spare. Can we get another $400 in that remaining day?
AND MORE: Wow. $1140 on Tuesday, bringing the total to $5745. Add in my G, and this “Drive for Five” just netted $6745. Anybody wanna make it an even seven grand? Seventy-five hundred?
AND MORE: I’d be a pretty lame fiancee if I didn’t give a shout-out to the future Mrs. Defense Tech, for donating a thousand bucks of her own. Thanks, Lizzie!
AND MORE: Seven hundred more as of Thursday noon — five bucks south of $7500, on other words. Anyone for a group hug?

Good job Noah.

I gave $5000 yesterday via Wachovia’s matching program. I plan to continue this over the next few pay periods. I will see about putting in some funds here as well. Either way it’s nice to see the public pitching in to support a good cause.
I just gave $250 which is on top of other donations I made yesterday.
Keep up the good work Noah.
Love,
Mom
$1,275 in just two hours. That rocks. Way to go, guys. Let’s keep this up.
And Cenobyte… that five grand is beyond generous. Good for you.

in for $100…. so far.
Cant believe the clueless Fedral DHS!
Thanks Noah. I spent my fair amount of time living life in the gutter and poor as dirt. I have money now and I do what I can to make life better for people, epecially when they loose everything through no fault of their own. I worry about every person down there, and can only hope the death toll is lower than it looks like it might be.
Good point about general relief funds, Eric.
Also, I know some people would rather give to longer-term aid organizations like Mercy Corps. I’m adding the group to the “Drive for Five” appeal.

You’re leading by example, Noah. Just a hundred now. Tom a/k/a defensetechdad
One thing to note, if its like Sept 11th, its “Katrina or other”, so any that the red cross doesn’t spend on katrina will be used for other red cross activities.

Humane Society’s Disaster Response Team (they help rescue, treat, and accomodate the pets left behind by owners who went to shelters): $25
Well, federal workstudy or no federal workstudy, I decided to handle my donation on my own when my sister attempted to do one for me through a religious organization… count another $50 (Red Cross).

I gave $250 to my local Red Cross chapter (San Antonio) to help house the evacuees here, and another $250 to the national Red Cross campaign.
I would also urge folks to consider the Air Force Aid Society (www.afas.org) to help those military families who lost most everything when Keesler AFB (on the Biloxi shoreline) was decimated.

I don’t have a ton of money, but I gave 25.00 through my compny that matches it 100%. If this gives a poor unfortunate a smile I will be happy. God bless the karina survivors and may you garner the strength to move forward.

$10 is all I can afford right now. More later, I promise.
I could only give $20 as I’m looking for work but people should note that a lot of chain stores including Starbucks and BestBuy are allowing donations at their cash registers to the Red Cross.
Like many others I will give more when I have more.
To all of those in the hurricane areas you are in my thoughts
