Most missile defense systems are like handguns, trying to hit a target with a single bullet. But the Pentagon has a new weapon in the works that’s more like a shotgun, spraying buckshot until it knocks a missile down. A prototype of the “Multiple Kill Vehicles” system could be flying by 2007. The Arms Control Wonk has details — and pictures, too.

I think its a great idea that someone had comeup with solution to a big problem (discrimination of decoys and real warheads). If it hasent been for Oncle Sam I would have spoken german or russian by now, so somebody has to do the job, and what would happen if the chinese came up with something of that kind ???. THANK GOD FOR ONCLE SAM !!!.

Dear Hans: If anyone can yet discriminate between a properly done missile attack system’s cloud of ‘junkyard clutter,’ and a ( probably, series, ) of active warheads, they have made a quantum leap in technology. The only defense against a real nuclear ( or other WMD ) missile attack is to ‘Launch on Suspicion,’ with high megatonnage airbursts to create a firestorm on the ground. Denmark may have been one of the few Nations that attempted to repay the US for its war effort, so good luck, Red.
Best bet for missile defense is to spray ahead of missile & ensuing “fog” destroys the missiles.
Place on commercial planes, bizjets???
