Army Threatens Retirements to Cut Budget

harvey_cheer.jpgActing deputy defense secretary Gordon England is telling the Army to get ready to cut $11.7 billion from its budget over the next several years, Inside Defense is reporting.
But instead of paring back its weapons systems or its massive modernization efforts, the Army is threatening to reduce the number of soldiers in the service.
In a highly unusual development, the Army has classified how it would pay its portion of the England-directed cuts. However, sources familiar with the recommendation say the ground service has turned not to its procurement accounts to pay its share. Instead, the Army — already stretched thin by current deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan — is proposing reductions to its force structure, these sources said.
Its a gold watch is what it is, said one industry official who believes the Army is fully aware that the Office of the Secretary of Defense would be loath to reduce the size of the service. Its causing quite some perturbations, said the official.

Don’t count Army noises now. This has already happened. The next step will be RIFing. those who are not in critical MOS’s.
Hurricane Katrina outted this problem when the Army couldn’t come up with troops for New Orleans. Most of those Regulars that did finally show up were AR/NG’s that have been activated for Federal Service. Overnight the troop count in Iraq went from 143,000 to 155,000. Hum, a little miscount here?

It looks like what I have always said, Some day
some low tech country with a lot of soldiers is
going to kick our ass. We are a country of video
games and high tech weapons, but we forget that
if we want to take and hold ground we need soldiers. I feel we are playing a deadly game by cutting soldiers for weapons, we can’t maintain our own soldier security, protect civilians, build the countrys infrastruture and seek out terrorist because we are under strength. I may not be a rockett scientist but I can plainley see some of our leaders are not either.

The FAA just downsized it’s controller work force by laying off 2000 near retirement controllers by outsourcing a whole option call Flight Service. The current administration cares little about individual government employees and more about contracting out. If they could they would outsource the whole army, shift the costs into contracts and say pat themselves on the back. What chance does a GI have who chose service over college if they will not be allowed to finish their enlistment. Read more at http://www.govexec.com under A76.

This is obviously a way to send a strong message. The military can’t do more with less and hasn’t been able to for some time. The fluff is gone. During a time when we can’t even get armor to our troops until they’ve been in country for a looong time, how can we cut any modernization program. During a time when we don’t have enough troops to meet all of our demands (including a new role in disaster relief) how can we cut people. Congress will pony up the funding eventually. What’s a few more billion in defecit? Just another budget drill…threaten to cut what you can least afford to cut and see what falls out.

I’m sure the cuts are necessary at some level of government expense, but the Military? Is this guy for real? Didn’t the Bush Administration research this guys resume? If President Clinton is listed as a reference you might not want to hire him!!!!!!!!!!

Ref your comments on the new Counter-IED equipment
$12000 each!!???!!! that is such a load of you know what! Raytheon is scarfing on that one. As a former team sergeant from a jamming team, I can tell you that a jammer is nothing special — it’s a basic transmitter that you can build at Radio Shack for probably $50, then add the amp and the computerized seek and destroy capability — ok you’re up to let’s say $1500 — that’s $10500 profit per unit and Raytheon should be ashamed of itself for ripping off soldiers who could use the money elsewhere like light modular armor for Humvees…and you said 6000 units are being purchased… sounds like some General is covering his derriere by saying look what we did to support the troops — another Defence contract that is a CYA measure and won’t really help the troops.
By the way — the unit won’t have to transmit at 500W like a real jammer used in EW. Your average garage opener, home cordless phone, tv remote etc transmit at miliwatts, maybe 5w at most. Do you realize a FRS (Family Radio System) can only transmit at 1 and 5w, like a marine radio and a CB for that matter. Of course you can tweak them up to maybe 12 to 15, but we’re talking unsophisticated IED’s — the electronics used to cook them off can be bought at any Home Depot, Kmart etc…
Do you think it’s worth $12000 a unit??

The jammers are a great asset, but we are forgetting that if you rely on technology alone and forget the basics, people will get killed. The people building these arent stupid. If they can rig a motion detector onto a bomb then maybe we should send our troops some remote controlled cars to run past the bombs. Hell, they only cost a few bucks!!

Improvements in electronic warfare are great. I just wonder why not go the other way, instead of jamming the signals to the IED’s, install radio equipment in helicopters that scan the entire spectrum of radio frequencies and detonate the IED’s in their factories, delivery vehicles and the ones already in place before our troops get there?
