White Smoke marks the enemy position, colored you own. Gun crews hate usinf WP, it's crossive and the projectals tend to leak. I can see nothing unusual about it's use as a marker, I'm sure it was used. As a weapon to attact targets with, I don't think so, CBU's are much more effective and you can enter the area right away, just don't step on or kick a yellow object.
