   I would like to say that, like it or not, this is a prob­lem beyond Democrat/​Republican/​Independent. The only way to solve it is tell these politi­cians that party pol­i­tics and posi­tion jock­ey­ing is for­bid­den or they will lose their pre­cious jobs alto­gether. When politi­cians give up all of our free­doms then we won’t have a need for politi­cians any­way.
   Our free­doms are taken too lightly by gungho blind fol­low­ers of peo­ple with more scary inten­tions. No free­dom should be freely given up.
   We already have count­less laws on the books to deal with bad guys of all kinds and we already have a good sys­tem in place. Trouble is the peo­ple using it not the lack of it.
   We have seen too lit­tle effort to hold the good old boys of either party or the CIA/​FBI respon­si­ble for their fail­ures of 9/​11 and other episodes. None seem to have the honor required for their jobs. Fighting between par­ties on any level includ­ing the man on the street gives in to the divide and con­quer tac­tics being used by ter­ror­ists and politi­cians alike.
   Further, I am not a hate mon­ger but I apol­o­gize to no one for being an American. I apol­gize to no one for being non Muslim and if Muslims really want to live in peace then please turn in or take out your terrorists.

   You all talk about mon­i­tor­ing those that kill, those that criple the US, those that do dam­age and break the law. YOu sup­port the mon­i­tor­ing of every­one, inno­cent and guilty. Well have you ever stopped to think about what they are doing to pre­vent small crim­i­nal acts? For instance, a group of peo­ple talk on the phone every day for a week plan­ning a bank rob­bery where they can get away with a few mil­lion. Does the NSA do any­thing to pre­vent this.….NO! What do the bank rob­bers do with the money they steal? Do they use it to fund ter­ror­ists? Feed their fam­i­lies? Or just have it to feel rich? What about the gang mem­bers that call each other to say where the next drive-​​by is? Are they stopped.….NO!
   When you talk about every­one being mon­i­tored to stop those that will bring harm to the US and the peo­ple who live here, stop and think to your­self, “Are we being fully pro­tected by hav­ing every­one mon­i­tored?” The answer to that ques­tion is obvi­ously, “NO we are not.” Because if we were being fully pro­tected against those that are ter­ror­ists, and ter­ror­ists in the Oath that you take when you join the mil­i­tary states, “both for­eign AND DOMESTIC”, then we would have far lower crime rates than what we have now.
   We lose more peo­ple here in the US to every­day killings that we fail to con­sider. We have lost more peo­ple this year to car acci­dents and gang-​​related killings than we have in Iraq and Desert Storm COMBINED!
   When I took the mil­i­tary oath, I swore to uphold the con­sti­tu­tion and defend our coun­try and beliefs from ter­ror­ists both for­eign and domes­tic. So obvi­ously my look on this sub­ject may be biased. BUT I do bring to light some good facts.
   So I ask you, “Is the mon­i­tor­ing of every­one really help­ing to pro­tect this coun­try from both for­eign and domes­tic terrorism?”

   The prob­lem with spy­ing inter­nally is mul­ti­fold.
   The door is open to limit free­dom of com­mu­ni­ca­tions through intim­i­da­tion and track­ing.
   The machine now does some of the eval­u­a­tion.
   The soft­ware is never going to be cor­rect in its assess­ment because the biases applied are some­times inher­ent in the algo­rithms, buried in the order of eval­u­a­tion, the data­sources, the bias to the infor­ma­tion cho­sen vs the data ignored, and based upon a spi­der like process of rela­tion­ships that are beyond com­pre­hen­sion to a sin­gle indi­vid­ual.
   The power of such tech­nol­ogy is not fully under­stood even by those imple­ment­ing the soft­ware, and the few who do under­stand it are con­sid­ered the “lunatic fringe nerds” and no one lis­tens or trusts what they say.
   Finally, the lib­erty that we have in the US is won­der­ful, and most peo­ple want the oppor­tu­nity and abil­ity to live in such a free soci­ety. However, not every­one wants the respon­si­bil­ity of fol­low­ing laws, of hon­or­ing their neigh­bor, of tak­ing a risk when things are less than ideal, or tak­ing a risk to get ahead.
   Fewer still want to lead in that process, and our media has done a good job of demo­niz­ing any lead­er­ship that is counter to their “feel good” poli­cies, even when those poli­cies are dan­ger­ous to our free­dom. Those who want absolute free­dom over their com­mu­ni­ca­tions using the first amend­ment, stand hard­est on remov­ing that same free­dom from every­one else. That can­not work. If no one can com­mu­ni­cate freely with them, then their first ammend­ment rights are gone.
   I absolutely believe that we have ter­ror­ists among us. I also absolutely believe that track­ing them via these intru­sive meth­ods in our own coun­try is counter to our best inter­est. I also believe that not track­ing them in this way car­ries some risk. People will die, and per­haps I will be one of them, should these means not be used.
   However, the ter­ror­ist threat is not new, and it will never go away. China built the great walls to pre­vent their ter­rors thou­sands of years ago. It didn’t work. We are build­ing the same kinds of walls, just new means, and they won’t work either.
   To stop ter­ror­ists, you must remove the top tier that is advo­cat­ing the ter­ror­ism, but not par­tic­i­pat­ing. We don’t need a new tech­nol­ogy to do that. Just some humint inside the orga­ni­za­tions, and we even know in many cases who these lead­ers are, who they are speak­ing to, and why those peo­ple are doing the acts.
   Using the ter­ror­ism to spy on our own cit­i­zens is a smoke screen, but I don’t yet know why it is being put up. Only the higher ups in our “two party sys­tem” really know that. And you can bet they are not talk­ing.

   I am con­fused with tyhe prob­lem of spy­ing in the US. The rea­son that the attacks on 9/​11 tok place was because we had “soft­ened” our tac­tics against ter­ror sus­pects. We need to take a hard-​​line approach to the new threats. In my opin­ion, the only ones who suf­fer are ter­ror­ists. I’m sure that I’m naive to every­thing that takes place, but, if you have noth­ing to hide; why are you worried?

   It is a sim­ple ques­tion. Was the law, vio­lated? Yes it was. Our Constitution, which every­one, includ­ing the President swore to pro­tect and defend against all aggres­sors, was vio­lated. Did he have cause? Probably. However, he could have fol­lowed the law with­out endan­ger­ing any of his goals. He sim­ply chose to ignore it. Unless he was given bad coun­sel from his sub­or­di­nates. I’m sure we are all famil­iar with bad Intelligence being worse than none. I’ve worked with Officer’s I’ve con­sid­ered exem­plary. Specifically, General Michael Dugan. But with­out a good sec­ond in com­mand to keep him from mak­ing bad polit­i­cal deci­sions, stat­ing “If I want to hurt you, it would be at home, not out in the woods some place.” That’s what hap­pens. At any rate, the vio­la­tions, occurred if/​when amer­i­cans were sur­veilled by the NSA, It’s not allowed any­where in the law, and by the fail­ure to notify said amer­i­cans when they were sur­veilled. The fines that can be imposed could be impres­sive. Especially the jail time. However, if they paid close atten­tion, doubt­ful, they would have destroyed the files in accor­dance with the law and denied any amer­i­cans were ever sur­veilled. God Bless America and Those Who Serve!

Im a vet­eran and I was attached to intel­li­gence dur­ing the Korean war, and I know that you do not broad­cast to the enemy what you are doing to gather infor­ma­tion. You may as well call them up and tell them you may be inves­ti­gat­ing them so dont say any­thing you dont want us to know. I think that a lot of the mess that is going on is caused by the fact that the democ­rats lost the elec­tions. I was a demo­c­rat at one time, but in the last year I have lost all con­fi­d­ance in their abil­ity to lead this coun­try, or do any­thing elese except bitch about every­thing that is done by the party in power. I have alway felt we may not agree with the party in power, but, we dont run it down all over the world, as some of our dear lead­ers have done. Of all of the things being said lately I have heard very lit­tle said about sup­port­ing our troops, it seems that has been placed on the back burner so they can moan and grown about every­thing the gov­er­ment is doing.
