   The arti­cle on “rescue-​​bots” echoes ques­tions of my own fol­low­ing the deaths in West Virginia. It was hard for me to believe that ten hours had to elapse before res­cuers could descend; granted there was a risk of fur­ther col­lapses if another explo­sion was touched off, but surely a small team wear­ing per­sonal breath­ing sys­tems and car­ry­ing oxy­gen for the vic­tims could’ve saved lives. Or at least tried!
   Alas I know noth­ing about under­ground res­cues; no doubt there are good rea­sons for them to tarry. What are they?
