DHS Budget, Broken Down

150-hsas.gifHomeland security analyst Christian Beckner obviously didn’t sleep too much last night. Or he played hooky from his day job. Or both. Those are the only explanations I can come up with for the exhaustive, five part analysis he put together of the DHS budget, just 18 hours after the thing was released.
Border security was the biggest “winner,” Christian tells us. Domestic nuclear detection gets a bunch more cash, too. Click through the links to see how DHS local grant programs, infrastructure protection, and analysis and operations did, too.
UPDATE 02/08/06 11:11 AM: Now he’s got breakdowns of the aviation and maritime security budgets, too.

Is this a surprise? Illegal immigrants and drugs are extremely visible to everyone every day and terrorists hiding in containers aren’t.
Actually, it’s hard not to see this as common sense. All props to al-Qaeda, but they only strike every once in a while, while the drug smugglers do their thing every day. I checked out the maritime security lead, having a personal interest in it, and found that port security and container security is getting short shrift, while “maritime domain awareness” and a new “marine security strike force” are being funded.
Sigh. The Coast Guard gets it own little special operations team (this being the current military fashion) and lots more gizmos and computers to track shipping and boats along the coast (this being the longstanding procurement fashion). It’s hard to imagine a situation where the Coast Guard wouldn’t have access to Navy Seals.
