Contact Bombs in Iraq
Iraqi insurgents are trying out a new tactic. “The newest method of triggering [an improvised explosive] is a contact strip laid across part of the pavement,” says Fox News’ Rick Leventhal, who’s in Iraq.
“It can be inside plastic tubing. When a tire hits it and the wires inside make contact boom. This method doesn’t require the cowards to be on scene, but it’s totally random. Any local on the road could be the next victim.”

uhm, yes interesting — but where’s the problem..
it is the same as a tripwire or weight-detonated mine used all over the world.
us army should have lots of experience in this field.
at least you can this time use a ‘mine busting device’ as first vehicle for some cleaning.

Hey if it works, it works. The next thing the insurgents will use to trip IED’s will be a “Welcome” mat, like the ones mom and pop store have where a bell rings when someone steps on it.
Of course this will excite President Bush and his cronies who, all along said the Iraqi’s would be there to greet us as “liberators”. Finely we can have that “Victory Parade” in downtown Baghdad, I suggest that Sec’s. Rumsfeld and Rice lead the parade and be the first one’s to step on the “Welcome” mat.

So what’s new about this? Fox news needs to dig a little deeper for stories. Clearly the arab oil sheiks want us out of Iraq so they can move in and steal from the populace. They have the money for better ideas than wires that can be easily spotted by alert drivers.
Not only are they sorry-ass cowards, but they’re too lazy to come up with effective devices.
You could make this targeted by connecting the contact tube to an “arm” switch 100m away but within line of site of the IED site. Then the bomber only arms the contact trigger when their targets are aproaching. This should defeat the short range jamming devices being deployed to defend HMMVs.
