Taking on Iran’s air force

The stand-off with Iran over its nuclear ambitions was just beginning while I was embedded with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 332 at Al Asad air base in Iraq. More than once the fliers lamented that they’d probably be back in the States by the time the “inevitable” bombing of Iran got underway. One conversation went something like this:

Me: Oh God. We can’t afford a war with Iran
Aviator #1: Whatever. We’d kick their asses.
Aviator #2: No, they’ve got F-14s!
Aviator #3: Yeah, my wife [deployed to northern Iraq] saw one!
Aviator #1: We’d still kick their asses.
Me: Oh God.

f14_16.jpgIf, God help us, the stand-off does turn violent, U.S. air power will play a critical role. For months pundits have predicted a massive bombing campaign to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, and perhaps even to attempt regime change.
But don’t expect Iran’s air force to roll over like Iraq’s did in 1991 and again in 2003. Unlike the Iraqi air force, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) appears to be well-armed, well-trained and eager for a fight. Besides the aforementioned F-14 Tomcats, 79 of which the U.S. sold to the country before the Shah was deposed, the air force operates several dozen of each of the following types:

J-7 (Chinese-built MiG-21 derivative)
MiG-29
Su-24
F-5E
F-4E Phantom
Mirage F1

All told, the IRIAF flies as many as 300 fighters. All are older designs, but have been maintained and, in many cases, upgraded by the indigenous aerospace industry, which has become proficient in reverse-engineering weapons and spare parts — and perhaps even engines. And the IRIAF has aerial tankers too — a force multiplier only the most advanced air forces maintain.
Veteran aviation correspondent Tom Cooper and his co-writer Liam Devlin wrote a fascinating feature for a recent issue of Combat Aircraft Magazine, profiling the IRIAF. The authors interviewed IRIAF defectors and U.S. Navy aircrew that have tangled with Iranian fliers over the Arabian Gulf. The feature cautions against the Western habit of underestimating the IRIAF:
In November 2003, a USAF E-3 Sentry flying a patrol over Iraq tracked a formation of no less than 16 IRIAF F-14As … This was the largest group of Iranian F-14s detected in flight by the U.S. military since 1997, when nine IRIAF Tomcats were tracked over the southern Persian Gulf by the U.S. Navy. … During the summer of 2005, several Su-24s were observed operating over the Persian Gulf, armed with Chinese-made C802K-2 anti-ship missiles. … Iranian Phantoms were sighted as well, usually carrying AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder [air-to-air missiles].

Now that the 1st Fighter Wing has its first F-22 squadron combat-ready, and with the Navy’s Super Hornets equipped with electronically-scanned radars, we have the capability to beat the IRIAF. But it wouldn’t necessarily be an easy fight. Throw in Iran’s SA-15 surface-to-air missiles and you’ve got a tough air-defense nut to crack. And remember … an air campaign might be just a prelude to a ground invasion. Last year I stood on the Iraq-Iran border and listened to Iranian armored divisions throw down practice artillery barrages. The Tennessee National Guardsmen I was with (the 278th cavalry regiment equipped with M-1 Abrams tanks) admitted that they couldn’t punch through that border if they wanted to.
We must find a diplomatic solution to the problem of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
–David Axe
P.S. — This discussion of Cooper’s article includes some interesting insights.

I say let Iran build their Nuke facilities and let the good old tried and tested (from 1945 to 1989) Mutually Assured Destruction do it’s thing. Wanna wipe Israel off the face of the Earth? The price ain’t gonna be worth it if you do…
No need to do anything but let Iran back itself into it’s own hole…

First of all, IT IS PERSIAN GULF. Secondly it is the Islamic regime of Iran that wants to build nuke facilities not the Iranian people. Iran is a peaceful nation, and Iranian people were the beginners of the WORLD CIVILISATION. No Iranians have any interest to create violent or instability in the region, it is the Islamic regime that is doing so. Having said that, NO IRANIAN WILL THE THEIR GREAT NATION OF IRAN TO TURN APART OR BE OCCUPIED. Down to the regime of Iran. This regime will be destroyed by the hands of the Iranian people.
    PERSIAN GULF WILL REMAIN

The name Persia has always been used to describe the nation of Iran, its people, and its ancient empires since 600 BC. It is derived from the ancient Greek name for Iran’s maritime province, called Fars or Pars in modern Persian, Pars in Middle Persian and P

Iran has about 250 combat air craft„ about 50 american fighters plus a AWAC could tke them all out in a pitched battle in about 15 minutes.….
Irans best bet would be to bury them and try to protect them with anti air craft missles.

The Iranian Air Force couldn’t handle the Iraqi Air Force, they assumed a defensive position for the duration of that long war, which is why they still have so many F-4s and F-14s left. They would be no match for either the U.S. or the Israeli Air Force.

If USA would think that Iran is like Iraq and Afghanistan, why it didn’t do any attack against Iran ?
so it is not easy to attack. If it was, USA would attack 20 years before not now.

I have studied the Iranian arm forces carefully. We must understand one thing. Any war is one by air! That is the most crutial point. The Iranians have 50 operational aircrafts. The F-14s are useless. Its radar is now outdated. The Iranian gave the Russian a copy of the F-14 with 6 pheonix missiles in exchange of military hardwares. The Russian tok the plane apart and incorporated some of its technology into its own. Now you wonder why the US Navy discontinued the F-114? Hummmm But the Iranian fleet has passed its prime and lacks proper maintenance and technology upgrade. Iran can fly only 5 F-14 at any given time but they are not combat capable to due metal fatig and salt water damage to the airframe since the Iranian airforce uses some F-14 in patrol in the Persian Gulf. The second point is that the day of dogfights are over! It will now take seconds for a western Airforce plane to shootdown the enemy. That is due to advance technology and PILOT TRAINING! Iranian planes are not only no match to the western airforces and teh Saudis or the Israelis, also Iranian pilots lack training. Before the revolution we had few topgun pilots but since than they either have fled the country, been executed or have retired many years ago. But today we have to yet find one qualified iranian pilot with one reasonably advanced airplane which has been properly maintained. Iran’s ONLY hope is build the bomb. Once they got it then it can dictate whatever it wants. But for now Iranian armforces, especially its airforce is weak. Iran has no Navy but few small chines patrol boats. Its 3 diesel subs are constantly in the shop due to repair nightmares. Iran only posses large quantities of ground troops. That is all.

Iranian nuclear facilities and airforce basis are poorly protected. Iran uses Rapier short range missiles, TOR and AAA to protect. The are vulnarable in many ways. Rapier is a short range misile and has a limited sealing. It can get hit by a missile flying its short range sealing. TOR 1 is a good diffensive system but has a short sealiong coverage also. It can get hit by a hi flying missile. AAA are not a good match against missiles. If Russia would have delivered the S-300 missiles then the game would have been over for the west since the S-300 are the most advance defensive missile that can hit any western planes up to 90,000 feet sealing. That includes F-22, B-1, F117.…But the ruskies have not delivered the planes since the are smart businessmen. They got paid for it buy Iran but the play that card well aginst the US and Israel for incentives.…Iran in return got screwed out of $1 billion! There you have it.

The only reason that this regime has survived is due to massive repression on those intellectual masses like college sutdents/professors, jounalists, middle class families…and through high subsidies for the majority who are poor in order to keep them quiet. At the same time the regime has stoolen billions of Dollars by hidding them in small islands of far east, china, Russia and some European bank who recently frozen those accounts, thank you very much old chap! If Iran did not have the second reserve of oil by now the regime would have collapsed. This regime is to the benefit of the arm industry since it has caused all teh oil rich states to buy useless western arms at 200% premium and also these oil rich countries have transfered trillions of dollars into western bank. Therefore the Iranian regime has been a blessing to the west AND to the state of Israel in terms of military and financial help! Now if Iran was a democracy, do you think that the west would have made so much profit? I don’t think so! It is all about money!

Dear Mr. David Axe, you findings are way too optmistic about the Iranian airforce. Remember, sadams four largest army of the world got defeated without any contest while sadam himself hide in a rathole! That was an Iraqi army that was battle READY due to 8 years of Iran-Iraq war. What make the Iranian armforces a ‘FORCE’ to be reconned with is out of my understanding! You are putting too many accents over the word F-14,Mig 29.…but these are only alphabates followed by numbers! That is the Iranian airforce. When a country who has been under sanction for decades and who passenger planes, military planes fall off the skys due to poor maintenance, do you call teh ‘FORMIDABLE?’ Trust me, the only middle eastern airforce to be reconned with is the one of Israel.

Iran planned to purchase 250 SU 30 (not 300) but after finding out that the export version of SU 30 is far inferior to the domestic version in terms of aviotics and electronics, especially for a country like Iran which would love to take a copy apart and incorporate the technology into its own aircrafts industry. The Iranian found out that the Export version is even more inferior to the aging F-16 and F-15 currently being retired in the Saudi and Israeli airfoce.

Any attack against Iran, if happens, will happen from North and the south simultaniously. From the north, over the Caspian sea, Formatins of dozens of unmaned planes likes the gloabl hawks or the predetors, each carrying antiradiations missiles to hit all the radar instalations. These planes play the role of decoy in order to foul the Iranian airforce personnel. Once these predetors are close to their target they will open fire toward Iranian radar instalation. Once the Iranian airforce is fooled, the Iranian will send airforce fighter planes toward the unmanned planes. Once the Iranian planes are airborned they will get hit by row of F-22s behind the formations of the unammed planes about 100 miles behind. Some US umanned planes will be destroyed but in return all the Iranian radar instalations along with Iranian Airforce planes will be visible to the F-22 radars. The F-22 then hit all the Iranian fighter planes from a distance of 100 miles and all the Iranian radar instalation will be also destroy. Therefore they pave the way for B-1 and B-2 stealth bomber with new buker busting bombs. The will destroy all the military and nuclear facilities before returning to their bases. Iranian airforce will be without defence and the US Navy will send showers of tomohaks missiles to hit other military and economical taget in Iran.
