I merely provided some perspective on why so many civilians have died in the face of the so-called "precision weaponry." The loss of life stemming from Israel's offensive in Lebanon is really a tragedy. I am even more concerned with the potential for the situation in Lebanon to turn into a humanitarian crisis. I've heard that the IAF has boomed some of the main highways so thoroughly that humanitarian aid trucks can't get out of Beirut. It may seem cold or heartless, but someone needs to look at today's events with a dispassionate eye. We need to learn lessons from Israel and Lebanon's mistakes to avoid making the same ones in the future.

Jim — There is no “boyish glee” my assessment of the situation. This kind of conflict in such an unstable region could easily lead up to a nuclear war, which would be your death warreats, and the end of human civilisation. My advice to you is to start emotionally maturing.

The boyish glee in watching a war unfold and weapons being used, which I see here, resulting in the deaths of so many people, I think is pitiable. Most weapons systems that are in use today originated from the requirements of hypothetical U.S.-Soviet military operations. The munition and platform requirements from that era generally revolved around the need to lay down a significant amount of high-explosive and armor-piercing rounds on enemy formations and C2 systems as percisely as possible, from as far as possible. Planners weren't concerned overly concerned with collateral damage or tight precision because their notion of the battlefield came from the experience of traditional force-on-force attrition warfare. They didn't anticipate fighting very small units in urban environments persistently occupied by civilians. My impression is that IDF's tactics in Lebanon will mirror their behavior in Gaza and the West Bank. First, they will apply air power against guerilla positions, assets, and leaders. Then, they will use commando raids directly against the same range of targets. If both of those fail, they move in armor and infantry to sweep the remaining objectives. For the final stage, IDF engineers are sent in to bulldoze the area around former enemy positions flat. Israel will be stuck in this formula until next-generation weapons, such as the small diameter bomb or THEL, become a reality.

Noah, the definition of “superior technology and firepower” is really a relative concept.
