If Israel's civilian & military leadership DIDN"T run their intentions by Washington before the Lebanon escapade, THEN something would have been wrong.
Granted, the low level of Israeli planning and intelligence might lead one to believe that Olmert and company are just clueless enough that might have happened. It's part of of our further education about how the world is changing, but it's an intersting moment when the latest ME conflict increasingly provides the spectacle of a disciplined, well-backed force with state-of-the-art weapons and strategy opposing a group of blustering military amateurs

Though I enjoyed reading some favorite John Arquilla soundbites in the context of the NEW YORKER, Hersh’s article is pretty obvious stuff. Whether or not you're ideologically predisposed to like Hersh or not the fact is that he tends to be describe things that turn out to be objectively true. It's pretty obvious that he's plugged into the "dissident" streams of career folks in DoD, State, and probably a bit in the intel community, and as long as his stuff keeps turning out to be true there's not much to be gained by calling him out on anonymous sources.

Shawn hit that on the head. So what if Israel had plans: It's called contingency planning and it's one of the most responsible, sane things to do for any government.

I find the whole discussion hilarious.
