Recon Planes vs. I.E.D.s

Since the Iraq insurgency began, the U.S. Air Force has been looking for ways to use its planes to fight roadside bombs. Electronic warriors like the EC-130H Compass Call jam frequencies used to set off explosives. Drones patrol highways, looking for new, suspicious mounds along the road. Sometimes they even take out the bomb-planters.
EQG_ewe8c_2.jpg
Inside Defense
reveals another Air Force tactic: Using ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) aircraft “to help coalition units round up insurgent cells believed to manufacture lethal improvised explosive devices.”

Military officials — working backward using surveillance video — were able to successfully trace IED placers moves using targeting pods and ISR aircraft like the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS), Lt. Col. Clint Hinote said during a Nov. 21 telephone interview…
[T]he Air Force has used its surveillance assets to find insurgent IED makers, as opposed to solely working to find or disarm the deadly devices, Hinote said…
You can have a security camera in the sky, he said. We actually have aircraft that have that capability of just taking shots of whats going on.
After IEDs detonate in places like Iraq or Afghanistan, Air Force ISR officials begin marking tapes of radar sweeps in an attempt to pinpoint the explosion, he said. They then essentially rewind the tapes, trying to discover any movements in the specific area prior to the blast.
Maybe you can find the car that was involved and backtrack it to a certain house, Hinote said. Weve got several ISR assets that right now are working on this backtracking plan.
Thats actually led to a couple of good successes where weve rounded up some IED cells, he added.
The ultimate goal is to track the IED maker to a bomb-making equipment storage location — and then even further back, Hinote said.

Unfortunely, to be politically correct it takes our $500M aircraft to their $50 IED. Americans have to play nice because some of our civilians and politicians do have the stomachs to do what it takes to win. This war is being lost because we are not united. There are many Americans who would love nothing more than to see America defeated. It is sad but true.

Let them explode when they are placing them or constructing them. You will eliminate the explosives as well as the people constructing them plus possibly their friends. I’ll bet that the manufactures have a maintenance code to activate all the phone without having to dial them with individual numbers. There is a far more effective way to find insurgents. Get the locations of all IED explosions since the occupation started and use
them as data points in a probabilistic model i.e.
least squares to generate a model to predict where the next attacks are likely to occur. The army could hire a wall street quant to do this.
Good hedge funds use the mathematics of random processes i.e brownian motion to give fund managers a way of calculating risk.
The same mathematical methods could be used to save the lives of coalition soldiers and home
in on the enemy as well.

using a 30mm chain gun. Since Hellfire Missiles
are pretty expensive and if you need to take a few more shots on a single mission wouldn’t a laser controlled gun be more effective?

I agree that all those in congress must share the blame. However there is a sneaking suspicion that the intelligence was flawed concerning WMDs and the administration knew it. Witness the two chief intelligence officers of the administration were not fired for faulty intelligence, instead the retiring chief of the CIA was given the highest medal available to a civilian when he retired. The other intelligence guru while not given a medal was promoted to be secratary of state.

Being tired of the blame game, one must realize the US depended heavily on Foreign Intel with respect to the alalysis that determined that Sadam had WMD’s. If you recall under the previous administration there were cuts in the Intelligence community thus causing a severe loss to the gathering capability. Then of course you have to realize WMD’s Deception was in fact being spread by Sadam.
The objective now is to help those seeking a better way of life eliminate the threat created by foreign insurgents and Islamic extremist.
The left in this Country have been out to deceive the American Public since day one. Some of our elected officials in both the House and the Senate are guilty of Treason and should have been dealt with accordingly. There is a huge difference between Free Speech and giving Aid and Comfort to the Enemy. They are certainly guilty of that.
Then you have those working for the government that are deliberately leaking Classified Information to the Press.

I want to say that I very much applaud and show my ut most respect for the very resourceful, high tect solutions that the U S Airforce is using to counter the terrible effects of IEDS through out Iraq ! Using high tech solutions such as airiel drones, integrated radar ect can be an asset ! However as a sci fi,Star Wars,Star Trek enthusiast and as some one who belives in Zen Buddhism, esoteric beliefs, theosophy ect and or “feel the force” mentality I have an even more radical approach ! I feel that new updated version of the Star Gate remote viewing program directed by Jessica Utts and Hal Puthoff durring the period from around 1972 to 1995 would be very much beneficial !! A psychic program or “feel the force” program could mean the differance of life or death for many Marine Corps Army personnel in both Iraq and Afghanistan !! How about using the power of Ki or the “force” to detect and possibly defuse IEDS and other explosive devices !!! While my psychic program of “feel the force” method may not be as conventional or as acceptable to may as the high tech solutions now being utilzed by the United States Air Force it could be used to enhance such operations ! This concludes my proposal !! With regards Devin Q Phipps formerly Lance Corporal Phipps

    I don’t care which country they’re in.
Now we need to make a statement or else Bin L’s words of how we don’t have the intestinal fortitude for a fight will ring true.
President Bush had it going on until he started worrying about the media. What are they doing embedded with our troups anyway? This is exactly how Viet Nam went. The “media” started the attack on us and then the Democrats used it for their own divices. Even though “they” got us into the war, it was turned over to Nixon. We’re right back there again with the media even more against us. To the point of Treason.
Everything they do just makes the enemy bolder. They would not have had the nerve to show NVA snipers shooting our guys. GOD knows they wouldn’t want to show anything good coming out of the war. That’s why you seldom hear anything about Afganistan. As I expected, the Democrats are attacking our guys (Murtha) and looking for somewhere to run. Well, I don’t want one of my sons killed over there, but I don’t want them coming over here to kill us either. Maybe we should use some of us old guys to help out. I’m getting old but I was a door gunner and an expert shot with a rifle, and I know I could still help out. Unlike Viet Nam, we own the night so take it over. The borders should be free fire zones at night and kill anything that moves. We should have enough electronics watching every inch of that stinking country so nothing moves without us seeing it. Hit all of the countries around Iraq to stop incoming IEDs. And on and on.
And many of you “Americans” are taking the media bait. You worry about the U.S. listening in on conversations. But when they blow up some school or stadium and you find out they were tracking the terroists you’ll scream bloody murder about why wasn’t something done? Waco, Ruby Ridge (Democratic excessive force) was OK, but man don’t listen in on my phone call. Where in the Constitution is shooting and burning American women and children protected. You better be careful what you wish for and be careful who you call “friend” and who you think as foe.
GOD Bless America and ALL who Defend Her.
To Hell with those who don’t.

LET US REMEMBER WE ARE ONLY WHAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA MEANS TO ITS CIIZENS AND THOSE WHO CHERISH THE TRUE IDEAL OF FREEDOM. I AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT THAT WE SHOULD USE EVERY BIT OF OUR TECHNOLOGY TO “OWN” ANY COUNTRY WHERE MAJOR ALLIES AND AMERICAN FORCES ARE, AND HERE’S THE KEY WORD, COMMITTED TO WINNING THE CONFLICT…LETS TAKE CONTROL OF EVERY INCH OF EVERY BORDER NECESSARY AND HAVE THE ASSETS CLOSE BY TO KICK THE LIVING SH*T OUT OF ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T LOOK RIGHT… A THREE YEAR OLD KID STRAPPED WITH A POUND OF PLASTIC IS SIMPLY
A !BOMB! WE DIDN’T CHOSE TO VIOLATE HIS PRECIOUS LIFE THEY DID…WE DON’T HAVE TO DIE FOR THEIR LACK OF CHERISHING A HUMAN LIFE.. THEY ALREADY DON’T.. VERMIN IS VERMIN.. THEY TRACK DISEASE WHEREVER THEY ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE HOLD AND HOLE UP.. LET THEM KNOW THAT IF YOUR ON THE BORDER OR IN THE STREET AFTER DARK ..YOUR DEAD.…REAL SIMPLE.. ONCE WE HAVE THEIR RESPECT, THAT WE WILL KILL EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM, AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER THEN MAYBE THEY WILL TAKE PAUSE TO CONSIDER THE STRENGTH OF THE AMEICAN CONVICTION NOT TO SQANDER OUR CIVILLIANS AND OUR MILITARIES LIVES ON STUPID IDEOLOGIC BULLSH*T.… RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.. Read up pal on history, the “MX missile” better known as Peacekeeper has been retired and is no longer on alert. I know because I helped deactivate it at FE Warren AFB in 2005.
Besides, why use a bazooka to kill a nat!
