The majority of the money paid to the TelCo's isn't for phone service, but for the humungous amount of bandwith the Navy uses. Between Inter/Intranet and Video TeleConferencing, that's where our money goes. The majority of Navy-Navy phone calls are made via the Defense Switched Network, which is substantially cheaper than a standard phone call. There’s just a bit of a problem with this story. The first thought that ran through my mind was what about VOIP? you'd think the Navy of all institutions might think of utilizing such cost saving technology. But Ofcourse the money being given away is taxpayer money, if the Navy had to fend for its self I'd be surprised if their phone bill would be more than a few million dollars never mind $4 BILLION. Please who ever owns this site, please send an email to the Navy telling them to contract with Vonage or some other VOIP provider and stop donating our tax money to telcos.
