Galrahn:
There was an interesting article out there about how the inital success was a good example of the art of war.
However, the article I read did not touch on the 'political' aspects of iraq, which I agree with you.

Even with the highest cost estimate the percentage of spending on the military is still the lowest ever based on the GDP during a war ever for the US. For those who believe the war is legitimate, the cost of the war is surprisingly low, not high, based on historical comparisons of expenditures during wartime based on GDP in wars past.
With that said, Sun Tzu warned about the dangers of prolonged deployments after battle victory was achieved, warned about the dangers to the state, and has strong words in the "The Art of War" for nations that have unpopular, prolonged periods of war.

Notorious America-hating peacenik William Lind (yes, for all you 28%-ers out there, that's sarcasm) has the only practicable solution to Bush's epic strategic disaster -- acknowledge reality, craft some kind of rapproachement with Iran, get the hell out.
You can read his article at that well-known Bolshevik mouthpiece, The American Conservative: http://www.amconmag.com/2007/2007_07_16/article1.html
