I just want to know how all the parties involved kept a straight face through this interview…

Thanks goodness for the leg restraints. Wouldnt want to get in trouble for having a wide stance, huh?

Ugh, the jokes just keep coming…

19 Million for a single toilet… WTF!? Are you kidding me? You can swing by the local hardware store and pick up a 16 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum & a couple bungee cords for about $150.00. Heck Space is a giant vacuum, just crack the airlock a bit & let it rip… or maybe not. 8P
It’s stories like these, that make me wonder if manned space flight is really worth it. I hope it came with a life-time warranty.
In space no one can hear you… ?

It isn’t about manned space flight it’s the way NASA does it. Whatever the Russians pay for their own space toilets, I’m pretty sure it isn’t $20 million; it’s just that they’ve embraced the first rule of capitalism: Go find a sucker.
Project Constellation is more or less the logical continuation of Apollo/Saturn V. It’s 30 years late after the Shuttle successfully burned probably $100 billion or so but hey, what’s a few billions amongst government agencies?

because me and the Devil are such great friends I am going to take his side on this one…
The cost of developing a good workable system for space is anything but cheap. The development cost for a new system like this would be very very very expensive, but for 12million we get the design for one that we can make cheap from here on out. So while it sounds like a bad deal, I suspect it’s really cheaper than doing it ourselves.

This makes the 1970’s revelation of the USAF Lockheed C-5 $ 800 + toilet seat very reasonable.
I know about rising costs because of the U. S. Congress promotion of continuing inflation, but isn’t this $ 18M toilet system a bit rediuclus ?

What I would like to know is this: Did they arrive at the “cost” for this “toilet system” the same way they arrived at the “cost” for the “toilet seat” in the C-5A?
If so, the credibility of this story is less than ZERO!!!

Just wondering… is it possible that we’re really paying for this so that we can improve relations with the Russians? I mean, doesn’t seem like there could be other motives besides just getting a toilet that works well in space?

remind me what NASA is good for again. really besides buying a toilet for 19 million and making multi billion dollar space explorations for life on mars what positive gains has NASA produced except for humorous scandels?

Who cares if we spend a few million for a pooper?
George Bush/Dick Cheney spend that much in Iraq in a half day to pay their contractors. BIg Deal.

I dont think that is nessary to spend that much on that we could be spending it on something that would be put to better use.

First of, I want to say that I think that all the space travel and everything we are doing, while it may be considered honorable is a load of c**p. (no pun intended). I there are many resources that are being put toward the space program that can be used in other aspects of our life. Why not put the $19 million toward saving the enviroment or creating alternte energy concepts. There are enough causes out there that actually need support and that affect our daily life that the money and resource that go into manned space travel are not fiscally responsible. I mean coe on we don’t even truly have a cure for the common cold yet and I bet there is aleast one person out there that gets sick in America everyday. Can we not justify spending the $19 mil on something to help us all.
And second, in response to AFRet91, I am a milspouse and although my veiws on the war on terror may be slanted, and I’m not saying which way,The contracters that are being paid this exorbitant amount of money are doing so to hep protect the lives of soldiers. Personally, I don’t believe that te military personal are apid enough and yes civialian contractors are paid more, but are you volunteering to risk your life in a war torn country everyday for a year or more in order to receive it. Most aren’t, so unless you are willing to do something about this, I suggest that you don’t talk anymore on the subject and if you want to know what gives me the right to say this, it’s because my husband right now is overseas fighting and possibly dying for my right to say it.
Honestly I don’t think the money we spent on this was a good thing, but unless we have a time machine or a money back guarantee, there is no use in talking about this, becuase lets face it, in all actuality we have no say so in the things the government does unless we decide to become the president.

If this is an International Space Station why NASA have to pay for the toilet? Don’t the Russian’s use the toilets? I thought it was a joint project and every body pay their equal share.

With all the crap (toilet) this should be squashed! Instead give the money to the VA to help
all the service people who will be scarred both mentally and physically. We still have vets from Korea and Viet Nam who have yet to get results about agent Orange and these were the people who
became our first being diagnosed with PTSD. With the length some of our service people who have been there for 4 tours they most assuradly will have problems the rest of their lives. Look at how many have commmitted suicide upon return!
