With no crew, who is going to destroy all of the equipment on board if one of these is about to go belly up over hostile territory? Maybe with no crew, it could be told to just nose dive into the ground?

Japan has a 767 based AWACS and Australia has a 737 based one that beat out an Airbus model. If the Boeing wins the KC-X contract it would seem that the AWAC/TACAMO/RIVET JOINT/COMAND SENT/ airframes would migrate over to the 767 body. IF Airbus wins then I would think the future airframes would be a big question. Maybe some of those jobs could be handeled by a 737?

Are there any long term studies to replace AWACS? I know they were upgraded recently– but I imagine a massive improvement can be made– both in capability and operating costs (two engine Gulfstream versus 4 engine 707: pilot with datalink versus 20 or so techs on the E-3)
