Brains rock, and this little gem proves it in all sorts of ways. The fact that the brain “accepts” the artificial arm as a realistic substitute within that timeframe is just amazing, as is the team developing this arm.
Not to long ago I ran across a bit of research on how our brains use tools. It turns out that when we use the tool our brains think of it as an extention of ourselves. We learn to use that tool in much the same way that we learn to use our arms, legs and digits when we are babies. Think about how the car feels like part of you when you are driving, or the plane when you fly.
Man, that is amazing fine motor control there. It takes forever for the human body to learn to do this kinda stuff with our real arms. It’s amazing that they can have tis much control with artificial arms.
Considering they show a man early on with both a prosthetic left limb and his original I wonder: would it be possible for a soldier or worker to figure out how to operate one or two of these limbs and his biological arms at the same time in a quad configuration?

Has Dean Kamen been elected King of the World yet? And if not, why the hell not?

Effing amazing. I’m going to have to learn more about how this interfaces with the afferent nerves and so on.
