Israel’s Russian SAM Zapper

torm1.jpg

The Jerusalem Post had an article recently on a secret electronic jammer that can render the Russian TOR-M1 and S300 anti-aircraft missiles useless.

If Russia goes through with the sale of its most advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Iran, Israel will use an electronic warfare device now under development to neutralize it and as a result present Russia as vulnerable to air infiltrations, a top defense official has told The Jerusalem Post.

The Russian system, called the S-300, is one of the most advanced multi-target anti-aircraft-missile systems in the world today and has a reported ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously while engaging up to 12 at the same time. It has a range of about 200 kilometers and can hit targets at altitudes of 27,000 meters.

While Russia has denied that it sold the system to Iran, Teheran claimed last year that Moscow was preparing to equip the Islamic Republic with S-300 systems. Iran already has TOR-M1 surface-to-air missiles from Russia…

…A top IAF officer also said this week that Israel needed to do “everything possible” to prevent the S-300 from reaching the region.

“Russia will have to think real hard before delivering this system to Iran, which is possibly on the brink of conflict with either Israel or the US, since if the system is delivered, an EW [electronic warfare] system will likely be developed to neutralize it, and if that happens it would be catastrophic not only for Iran but also for Russia,” the defense official said.

Neutralization of one of the main components of Russian air defense would be a blow to Russian national security as well as to defense exports. “No country will want to buy the system if it is proven to be ineffective,” the official said. “For these reasons, Russia may not deliver it in the end to Iran.”

One of our top Defense Tech readers and someone who’s in the know on these matters commented to me:

The information warfare that is going on between Russia and Israel is the end result of the report back in Sept. 2007 that Israel bombed a site in Syria where the purpose was not known and results of it showed up in the news back in March: “Syrian Nuclear site bombed.”

When in fact one of the purposes for this raid was to probe the defense of Syria which happen to contain this S300 and M1 TOR systems. It was speculated that Israel was using this as a counter-marketing stunt, more specifically to leverage Russia. By this I mean to have a lever which financially encouraged Russia to back away from Iran in order to isolate that country completely by selling the counter-measure system to whomever needed to defeat the anti-aircraft system.

If this was even remotely true, this already affected the future sales of this system. Technically speaking, even without Israel doing this publicly, those who care about the ECM/EW stuff already knew all they needed to know. Bluff or real, the affects are obvious. The next thing to look for is to see if Russia continues to sell these systems to Iran. Well played Israel!

I mean, Israel is known for its psywar prowess — though of late they haven’t been terribly sophisticated about it. The Syria thing still seems a mystery wrapped in an enigma to me, with rumor and innuendo woven into the brittle fabric of truth. I like our informed reader’s narrative here…It’s definitely to tasty morsels for thought.

I bet this story is false. Just another effort by the Israelis propoganda machine. A effort to make the Iranians cancel the purchase of the S300. Why buy it if the Israelis claim they can disable it? I don’t think the Iranians are this dumb.
Btw, we can’t even jam with 100% effectiveness 1970s era SAM.

Russians better get their act together with this deal over the sale of S-300 befor it becomes obsolete.
On 28 Dec last year, Iran reported a ‘No-Go” on the deal:
    http://www.presstv.com/Detail.aspx?id=36636&amp;sectionid=351020101
Then on July 23 08, the same agency reported a deal with delivery due before year end.:
    http://www.presstv.com/Detail.aspx?id=64599&amp;sectionid=351020101
I wouldn’t believe anything that comes out of the Iranian regime right now (remember, they are under sever world focus), because the S-300

The Israelis are smart, that is how they did it. They have more college degrees per capita than any other nation.
Many of the top Israeli students are put into intelligence organizations who come up with such wonderful toys.
Anyways, they are surrounded on every side by fanatics who want nothing more than to wipe them off the face of the Earth. They make military equipment that works. It has to, or they are in big trouble.
Heck they take our fighter planes that we sell them and redo the electronics. Ours are set for long range engagements, they do not have that luxury. The put electronics in that are more geared to short range fights.

The air force invests a lot of money into monitoring radar sites. The S-300 was a cash strapped project, they probably neglected anti-jamming capability. If you put the pieces together, all the money we spend monitoring SAM sites, and the investment in jamming tech using the phased-array radars in the latest gen jet fighters, it would support this theory that these S-300’s are vulnerable.
It’s like 802.11 security, the hackers are always one step head it seems, and I’m sure these S-300’s have nothing close to the security your $30 access point has, and it’s not like the missile has a highly directional antenna.

Apart from the Israeli jamming toy talk, HAARP in Alaska can completely jam any area on the northern part of earth. It can direct storms, cause earth quakes and electronically mess up any communication system. Never thought why Chinese New Year was such a mess? And why that earth quake happened some time ago in Iran and last in China just before the Olympic Games? And why the great tsunami happened just when the atrocities in Iraq reached world anger? That New Orleans had to be washed out by Katrina, because no other thing could have done it better. Not all storms and quakes and flooding is done or enhanced by HAARP, that’s why it is such a good system, hard to accuse. However, in a scenario of world war HAARP is the first target of the enemy, from Chinese controlled North Korea which is very close by and has the Bomb.

Remember that the two little A-bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed 450000 people by 1945. Our bombs are 10x stronger today. It is unthinkable that so much human suffering is allowed to happen ever again. Imagine what one can do. One can think a New Way. That is to make Peace instead of making war. If all countries pledged to spend 10% of their military budget on education, sharing resources and raising living standards of all people world wide. Spend money to promote friendship, equality and global citizen ship, Then from Hiroshima we may have learned, otherwise we are as stupid or more dangerous than before.

    Captainzen,
Wether what you say about jews is true or not the same can be said of any race. It is simply human nature aht groups that identify with each other will breed superiority.
    Look at any other race/ethnicity/nationality.
You dont think christians have a superiority conquest? What about the Crusades or the chirstian invention of social darwinism and how it justified the subjugation , mass conversions and killings of indegenous cultures.
How about islam and its caliphates? at least they were more tolerent than christianity.
And it goes on adn on
Funny I dont see jews trying to convert other people to their religon, but guess what if people do CHOOSE and not coerced they are accepted with open arms.
Look at racicm against darker skinned human beings that is not superiority?
The reality is that is present EVERYHWERE, and jews are taught to treat everyone with respect. The difference was that jews were never in power in any country, they were DIFFERENT. Humans dont like differing groups especially ones they dont understand.
Israel is surrounded by nations that want to wipe them off the map and kill her citizens. The elected officials have responsiblity to the citizens of Israel first and they would be derelicts of their duty NOT to have atomic weapons as a LAST RESORT.
    You are quite the ignoramus.

It’s interesting that someone who calls himself Zen is so hate-filled. ‘The Jews must have done something to make Hitler so mad’? Classic. Jews have been hated by many in the past 2000 years because they are different than many of the peoples they were forced to live among. Un-evolved people hate those who are different from them; it’s easy to blame the others for crop failures, witchcraft, and killing Jesus. Also, Christian denominations have despised Jews “for killing Jesus.” Actually, it’s because Jewish theology makes a lot of sense, and so it was a threat to the churches’ market share.
Let’s try it another way: Those Africans who were enslaved, tortured and murdered for hundreds of years in the U.S. must have done something to make us Americans hate them so much.
    Get it now? Probably not.
Jews are blackmailing all of America’s politicians? Sure; so many of our politicians would otherwise be uncorrupt and fully trustworthy. And who are these “Jews”? Natalie Portman? Adam Sandler? Are they part of the conspiracy?
And finally, Jews don’t scare all of America. They scare you though, and that’s sad.
