To clarify: From the content of the article and the comments made, it looks difficult to use for anyone — pilot or not.
Whoah! Before you ‘count coup’ there Dr C, did you happen to actually read the LAST paragraph in my previous comment? Just guess what kind of evaluation I performed on that prototype (it was AAI’s candidate if anyone cares), hmmm? If you’d like, we can begin a running dialogue deconstructing UAV operations using the SHEL model…and boor the laymen to death.
To answer your question SMSgt Mac, it appears the Air Force is unwilling to allow ‘non-rated’ folks to fly the things. We can all agree it needs to be made easier to fly. Let’s get that taken care of before we try to start an inter-service fight.
1. It wasn’t a question to be answered, it was a rhetorical question used as a lament.
2. A more correct statement would be “…unwilling to allow ‘non-rated’ folks to fly the things AGAIN”.(Yes, This is why this a hot button topic for me)
3. The only interservice rivalry involved is mighty my pre-Aspin-BUR Air Force, and the current gutted-shadow-of-what-it-once-was-that-remains Air Force. Please note this more is a comment on the National and Air Force Leadership that made the decisions in the 1993–95 timeframe that set the AF on its current course and the Air Force as an institution than anything else. I work with some mighty fine blue-suiters to this day: there’s just too-few of them and a poorer infrastructure and institution supporting them.(- but that was another post at another time.;-)
I used to think the Air Force was horribly out of touch; now I know for a fact it is true. Thanks, Col. Chambliss. You deserve a Medal of Honor for explaining so succintly why many people think the Air Force is a bunch of whiners.
