Hey Christian,
Why does the USAF use qualified pilots for UAVs? Strikes me as turf protection given the multi-$m cost of pilot training from start to wings.

Check out DoD Buzz…They had a story on this when Schwartz talked to AFA conference. They’re going to move away from the trained pilot thing and have dedicated UAV trained operators, I think.

USAF trained pilots will continue to operate UAVs but the ‘operators’ will be pulled fresh out of the Academy. Gone are the days of grizzled veteran pilots being rotated to UAV piloting duty. Thus, for the majority of future UAV operators, this will be their first assignment.
