Mr. Powell was a grat military strategist, but that is where it ends.
I never felt he was any good at politics, especially after the briefed the UN on the WMD’s in IRAQ and never took any responsibility. He was a military man and knows how he must depend on his staff for accurate data.
There is something that has kept Powell out of elected office, and it is not his participation the Bush Admin fiasco. The word is he has some serious dirty laundry and could never hope to even run for office, much less win. This is not so much a bump up for Obama as it is a hit against McCain.
Is there a “Meh.” answer halfway in between the two?
At this late stage of the game, having Powell jump in doesn’t make that much of a difference. But it’s nice, I guess. Sorta.
Powell is one of the few vocies of reason in a landscape of shrill rhetoric and partisan bickering.
The GOP had better really look at why people like Powell are endorsing Democrats….
But the man should get, and deserves, no respect, and should spend the rest of his life in a private hell, with the cries of all those who died in Iraq echoing in his ears.

The cries of who in Iraq, Nicholas? The few dead in the war, or the many more who would have been murdered by Sadam Hussein and his evil Baath Regime?

Back to Powell. He endorsed Obama for two reasons:
1) Obama has promised him a job in his hypothetical administration.
2) Obama is Black.
That is all.
Wes,
Yes, I’m sure those two very detailed reasons are why a man who used to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff endorsed Barack Obama….
I’m glad you’ve distilled it down into two logical, intelligent reasons we can all understand…..well thought out.
I have lost all respect for Mr. Powell. For him to place Race above trained leadership & his personal friendship with Mr. McCain, is a sell-out of the worst kind. He’d never promote someone with BMO’s training to lead a squad in a basic training platoon, much less anything more serious. He’s never politically promoted a liberal white guy in his life. I’ve read his book. So, I’ve only one conclusion: This is a Race Based decision on Mr. Powell’s part.
A Traitor: NO. A Disingenious politically motivated Racist: YES!
This is an endorsement from a HAS BEEN, discredited General, who’s bored wife wants that he & she get back into the DC social life so they can be invited to nice party’s. He’s simply tinkered with his Volvo for to long!!
Perhaps some nice cabinet post or other political plum will be passed along to him if BMO wins. That’s what is normally called a sell out in my view.

While I still respect the man I am dissapointed in Powell. He may not like McCain but certainly he should recognize that Obama stands against conservative values, will not be good for the military, and lacks the experience we need at this time.
Why is no one able to listen and absorb what Colin Powell has said?
His endorsement is borne more out of his concern of the direction of the Republican party and in a larger sense our Country.
The Republican party will continue to lose elections and popular support until they wake up and smell that something is rotten in Demark. The party needs to evolve and adapt….the gap between what the hardcore ideological conservatives in the Republican party believe and what the American people want are diverging radically…..until the Republican party does something to redress this divergence they will continue to lose influence.
Senator Barack H. Obama received a very impressive endorsement by former Secretary of State, General Colin L. Powell. Being a member of the undecided voters, I truly appreciated General Powell giving clear reasons for his endorsement of Senator Obama over Senator John S. McCain. I was stunned at General Powell
Obama has no military service record. He’s an attorney, community organizer, politician.
.
However, I’d say Obama would be far more open to using private military contractors in Iraq than would honorable, old, establishment war-horse, Sen. John McCain.
.
You use private forces to defeat privateer insurgents. Obama would conceivably withdraw the majority of US combat forces and replace them with PMC personnel.
.
100k a year tax free is a morale booster and a strong incentive for professional soldiers to return to Iraq.

Wes,
Keep believing that everything is rosy…meanwhile the Republicans continue to lose elections and influence.
Sticking your head in the sand does not make a problem go away.
By the way, I am a Republican…and where does the ‘elitist’ label come from? Because I think and questions….yes, that is dangerous thinking isn’t it….
At this stage in the game, it means little. There aren’t any more “undecideds”. They’ve already made up their mind. The election is in like two weeks.
I didn’t vote in the poll as I feel it is skewed to far in either direction. While not a game changer I think Powell’s eloquent endorsement definitely helps Obama.
Watching people like Wes, here, and Novak at the WP, call Powell a RINO is really telling. It shows that the party is fracturing more and more every day. Hopefully the inevitable losses in Congress and the probably loss of the presidency will inspire the Republicans take back their part from ideologues and Neo-cons. Those who have made it a party of hate and fear, instead of ideas and values.
Whew….thank you Phillip and Joe….finally two voices of reason and thought.
Joe, excellent points…exactly what I was trying to get people to think about. The party has been leaving conservatives….not the other way around. Look at the state of things now…Government intervention to an unprecedented level, Government spending that is so far out of control it is unbelievable, this administrations push for expanded Presidental powers…..
Powell said one of the reasons he wants Obama to win…is that the prospect of two more conservatives on the Supreme Court is “scary”.
This man is a Republican
RINO
So is what Wes and others are saying is that if you are a republican, and you disagree with the way they are handling the country you should still vote republican? What happened to this being the land of the free. We have had a crappy 8 years of president Bush. Most of us aren’t willing to try with McCain. I used to listen to what he had to say, used to think he would be better for the military. Then he selected Sarah Palin as his running mate. WTF, she is in no form or fashion smart enough to run the country, point blank. That was a selfish choice to attempt to get disenfranchised Clinton voters. This is what made me turn my back to the republican party. Cheney seems as if he could be Satan’s son, Bush started the war in Iraq for absolutely no reason, then kept changing the reasons and the goal posts. Scandle after scandle with the republican party. American citizens are sick of it obviously, which is why Obama has so much support.
What the republicans can’t even realize, is in all of their pouting, and all of their negativity has shown that they are the same old people, not the ones to bring”real change” as McCain would say. America is sick of the negativity. You guys couldn’t even accept Powells decision without bring race into it. We the public are sick of that too.

It’s ok the U.S. will decide it’s fate in 11 more days. We are after all back under the same type of government our fore fathers fled. The American people did not heed Jefferson’s warning in being vigilant with this Republic. History has a vicious cycle. Were almost back to the start. Hopefully we can win our freedom back!!! LMFAO
