On the flag, previous replies are correct we wear it facing that way to show forward movement. As far as wearing the shemagh, sometimes it is beneficial to blend in a bit and they are great for keeping some of the dust out of your lungs when operating in arid climates. I have one I wear all the time in a skull and crossbones pattern from T.A.D. Gear.

"Also, is it just me or is his American Flag patch backwards?"
Take a look at all US uniforms that sport American flags on the right shoulder. They are all like that. They are facing the direction they would be facing if you were carrying a flag on a pole towards battle, that is, star field forward.

Hibbidyhai, the star field on the flag must always point forwards.
But I don't get why we have to adopt the arab pattern in the headwrap. Rubbish. Some cammo pattern would have been better. ACU even.
Ane oh teh noes! He's using a Serpa holster! Run! It's the debil!!!!!!!!11111eleven

Is the headgear supposed to blend in better with Middle Eastern enviroment? Also, is it just me or is his American Flag patch backwards? But it is cool that there is a new contributor.
