Where does the article say "some aircraft not able to fly"?
Also, no pilot takes off, from anywhere, in a 747 or a Cessna, without "meticulous planning to avoid nasty weather"--it's required by regulations, both FAA/ICAO and military.
In the mid-Atlantic during October, "nasty weather" can mean tropical storm systems, if not actual hurricanes.
But you probably knew that.

I didn't think there could be anything worse than a long flight in a C-130 sitting on the fabric seats with one of the metal cross braces between your cheeks. I was wrong...

If it's the first time that the Osprey is going cross Atlantic, then you can bet they will plan like hell to make sure weather isn't a factor. This goes for the same with any new aircraft or system when it first accomplishes something like that.

System failures, some aircraft not able to fly in spite of a lavish supply of spares and maintenance crew...and it only works if you have "meticulous planning to avoid nasty weather."
And they're saying what it a success it was.
Anyone else recognise lipstick on a pig?
& btw Bamako is a city of 1.6 million people, not a desert... maybe they were somewhere in the vicinity?

I suspect the biggest strain with modern TFR systems is to the nerves of the aircrew while in autopilot. Least that was the case with the F-111. Taking your hands off an letting the aircraft fly can be a real stressor.

Making that trip in a CH-53 would suck... then again, you can shove a CH-53 into a C-5 and and get it there even quicker. Maybe the Air Force could use a bigger C-5 or a smaller V-22?

This is great news for me. I work in an Industrial Engineering support role for the V-22 program at Vought Aircraft Industries. We make the Doors, Ramps, Rudders, Elevators and the Empennage of both of the MV and CV models.
FYI: Empennage is the correct term for the Tail of an Aircraft.
