NATO fleet deploys to either fight pirates or sack Troy
Sometimes I wish they’d they’d let Marines name ships instead of just task forces
Iranian RC clubs make for great target practice
Article on “shadow fighters” just as awesome as it sounds
“Lafayette, we are here back

Urban legend — but still damn funny

The clown talking about ‘cost’ in fighting piracy compared to the profits the pirates make…
a hellfire missile from a predator would cut cost, but then the left would cry about the inhumanity of it. Also those french Marines could have just cut throats instead of arresting people. Being nice costs money. If you want results with no nice, it will cost less.

Joe,
I guess I’m the clown. Rules of Engagement makes military operations more expensive? Yea, I think that should be fairly well known by now.
There are two instances of international Navies firing first and asking questions later. The Indian incident where a survivor claims India blew up a fishing boat instead of a mothership, and the Russians whose shells blew up some nearby Yemen fisherman and nearly cost them the use of a port for logistics. The western policy of taking a police approach is intended to avoid that type of collateral damage, which can and does happen in the populated littorals.
Precision weapons increase the precision of targeting, but only with a physical sailor at the point of contact can we insure successful identification of one unpainted boat with pirates from another unpainted boat full of fisherman. This mimics similar lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan when operating in complex terrains.

I was using a touch of sarcasm. You can be humane, or you can be cheap. Personally I feel they should be given a proper rocks and shoals review…then hung from a yardarm. Regardless of cost, the job needs to be done. As for the missile strikes, if you are sailing about with RPG’s and such, not flying a national flag, not wearing a uniform…you might as well wear an eyepatch.
Appeasing or paying off pirates does not work. Barbary Coast anyone?
