Company Says No ‘Flesh-Eating’ Ground Drones

EATER.jpg

The Pentagon has shown it has a great appetite for drones and robots — everything from missile-firing UAVs to prototype patrol-bots guarding air base perimeters.

But a Maryland company working on a program for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, has the idea of giving the robots their own appetites, letting them feed on biomass as a means of fueling themselves.

But as the image of flesh-eating drones refueling off the battlefield dead has spread in recent days, Cyclone Power Technologies of Florida, the company developing the robot’s engine, has issued a statement about the Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot’s — aka EATR — diet.

It is vegetarian, the company said in a press statement released Thursday, in response to stories with headlines such as “Dawn of the corpse-eating robots?” and “Pentagon contracts company for flesh-eating robots.”

“We completely understand the public’s concern about futuristic robots feeding on the human population, but that is not our mission,” Harry Schoell, chief executive officer of Cyclone, said in the statement. “We are focused on demonstrating that our engines can create usable, green power from plentiful, renewable plant matter. The commercial applications alone for this earth-friendly energy solution are enormous.”

EATR is being developed by Robotic Technology Inc. of Maryland under a program sponsored by DARPA. EATR is envisioned as a robotic platform able to conduct long-range, long-endurance missions without the need for manual or conventional refueling, Cyclone explained in its statement.

Cyclone said RTI’s EATER will be able to find, ingest and extract energy from biomass — that is, “twigs, grass clippings and wood chips — small, plant-based items for which RTI’s robotic technology is designed to forage.

“Desecration of the dead is a war crime under Article 15 of the Geneva Conventions, and is certainly not something sanctioned by DARPA, Cyclone or RTI,” the company said.

I think it’s good that they responded, but at the same time a bit pathethic too that they had to respond to inane and idiotic comments posted on teh net.
Just because something says biomass, some idiots thought they’d be funny and argue that this would then mean that it would eat human flesh.
Who would even think of desiging such a thing?!

I recall a Si-Fi short story from my youth, many years ago, wherein a future battlefield was populated by tiny swarming robots (perhaps today they would be characterized as micro-UGV). They were mobile, equipped with sensors (thermal, optical, odor sensing, radiological) to locate living human beings. Their business was the gnawing down by high speed rotary blades of any “enemy” human they located. Think mini-battle bots. The enemy was differentiated because the friendly’s wore a specialized isotopically mixed “dog tag”.
So somebody already thought of this idea years ago. Another been there, done that. (TGIF)

Two questions. First where does it sh** and second how will it wipe itself. UAV’s with inflamed hemorrhoids could be a battle field nightmare.

It’s fun to joke about it but biomass is biomass, whatever the form. The article I read stated the unit would be programmed to look for twigs, grass, etc… If it can be programmed to look for one type of fuel it can be programmed to look for another.

Yeah, CNN, which proudly broadcasted the running toll of how many US troops were killed in Iraq, and consistently broadcasted how this (bogus) Mosque was bombed or that (faked) wedding party was attacked. If CNN covered WWII we would have never won…
Yet they do not keep a running total of how many babies are murdered in the US every day… Around 4,200 US troops died in Iraq to date. Over 800,000 abortions were performed in 2003 alone. That is like 200 Iraq wars…
This current president is appaled by Gitmo, CIA torture and calling this conflict the “War on Terror”. Yet fully supports the murdering of infants.
Maybe he supports “green” energy generation off of baby bio-mass.…

Please spare us the US Nazi Forces Drivel, When was the last time the US MILITARY invaded a country to expand its territory? How about 1898 during the Spanish — American war, well before you and probably your parents were even born. When was the last time the US tried to exterminate an entire race? NEVER! Before you dare to compare the US miltary to the 3rd Reich, have the courage and honesty to have some facts in hand before you make a statement like this.

Face it, history shows that EVERY nation invents things. I’m sure that someone where you live has invented something that was unrealistic at some point in history.
So, to sum up. While the idea of a “Self Sustaining” drone vehicle of this nature DOES raise concerns, the TECHNOLOGY involved in its creation is interesting. Bio Fuel that can be picked up off the ground has potential. If the bags that I put grass clippings in could power my car or my home, I would say that it has potential. If the leaves I rake up every year can fuel my lawnmower, THAT has potential.

This technology would be ideal for recovering waste biomass from remote locations (e.g. forestry thinnings) for conversion into biocrude (via fast pyrolysis). It resolves a lot of the transport cost issues associated with raw biomass recovery as well as associated labour costs.

    1) I know the list, most of it at least. But you forgot something. Most of these countries (and the others too) already moved past the Dark Ages.
    2) All those old torture / execution / military devices which you listed cannot threaten planet Earth, only individual Humans. Since you poor U.S. American haven’t the faintest clue “what” I meant with “planet Earth” : We Euros call it “Nature”. European scientists believe we need it to live.
    3) Your “peaceful herbivores” have digestive bacteria that break down long chains of hydro-carb molecules (that compose straw, fibres and other cellulose) into short = highly energetic (“explosive”) molecules (like glucose, whose energy is stored in our A.T.P.). But the Military know how to turn these bacteria virulent, totally out-of-control = literally omnivorous, enabling them to break down meat and all other LIVE tissue too. Sooo, will the “E.A.T.R.“‘s engine stoically refuse the occasional mouthful of protein in the desert just to keep roving on or will it include a back-up of anthrax-like strains, to go 100 % “multi-fuel” (= to harvest Humans, in High U.S. American think / speak) ?
    4) I said it before: On the long run, the biggest, most existential threat to the U.S.A. isn’t some Oriental country or the “Axis of Evil” of this season, it’s the way you U.S. Americans yourselves drift mentally, psychologically hopelessly apart from normal Humans. The training of robots is not a simple task and the complexities of what we consider to be ordinary human tasks should not be underestimated. The software underlying the multiple task management can become enormously long, with opportunities for errors, of course.
I have managed to train 3 of my better robots to have “breakfast” with me every morning. While I have what you would recognize as an American country-style breakfast, my three electro-mechanical friends have a somewhat more specialized, and I should stress, chemically related to vegetarian diet. They can now mimic my human eating movements while recharging themselves or performing minor recycling activities. Just for safety’s sake, I have imprinted them with the title “Herbivore” in at least 50 places within their programs.
The only problem I’ve noticed lately has been that they appear to watch my food, particularly the eggs and sausages, with great interest as I eat them. However, I don’t take this staring as any possible danger, and they even smile and say, “Thank you, Herbie”, at the end of each meal.
There’s nothing to worry about. I can’t imagine any ‘nightmare scenario’ of something, anything that could go wrong with my powerful metallic friends who were built to have a taste for human tasks. In fact, I’m experimenting with giving them extra work while putting them on a very restricted diet, something that would anger any human, but all they seem to do is quietly confer with one another more frequently.
    Sincerely,
    Dr. Herbie Vore
    Robotologist

For those strident Europeans here who are so horrified at the USA and its military, I say this..
The NEXT time Europe is being CONQUERRED, do NOT beg us to please come and save you , as we had to do TWICE in the last 100 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do NOT whine about the Muslims taking over your cowardly continent because you are too politically correct to stop them!
Do NOT complain when Iran has Nukes in a few years and the missiles to deliver them to all European countries who refuse to covert to Islam!
And do NOT ask us to care about Russia growing as large and arrogant as they were in the past as they start to look at Europe as their next area to be attacked!
We will just dissolve all the alliances and defense treaties we have with all European countries, and then let YOU show us how to be BIG and BRAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the robot is pretty cool. Although make you want to envision the worst that could happen and that would be Terminator style applications.
However I just want to point to the anti-Military mouthing off on here. No matter what else you say about what the USA has done in the past, who over the last couple years has been routinely cutting REPORTERS, CIVILIANS and OTHER NON COMBAT PEOPLES head off? That would be Muslim Extremist such as the Taliban and others. Sure we’ve had a few mishaps along the way. But you don’t know the true cost of human life. All the media wants us to know are our Soldiers deaths and any civilians we accidentally kill. Never do we hear of entire villages wiped out by Taliban as a show of force to try and cow other villagers into submission.

And I’m sure these little buggers won’t eat corpses, or living humans, or turn on their masters either… Everything the government gets involved with gets screwed up, so why would this be any different?!??
And, if you robotic geniuses go forward with autonomous decision making robots, whats to stop them from deciding that all humans are the enemy and attacking us too?
And don’t tell me there will be safeguards and security. I’ve worked in IT for 26 years and I KNOW very well that errors are in ANY complex system and technology that accesses anything else can be hacked!

    To freefallingbomb,
I’m not saying that the US is perfect, although I believe we are a damn sight closer than most others.
You wrote, 1) I know the list, most of it at least. But you forgot something. Most of these countries (and the others too) already moved past the Dark Ages.
To that I say, your right, that WAS the middle ages. My arguement still stands, the US is NOT the only country that “could — and DO — invent such a sick, SACRILEGIOUS shit.”. I was hoping you would realize that EVERY COUNTRY has made devices that were mistakes at best and terrible at worst.
You stated “2) All those old torture / execution / military devices which you listed cannot threaten planet Earth, only individual Humans. Since you poor U.S. American haven’t the faintest clue “what” I meant with “planet Earth” : We Euros call it “Nature”. European scientists believe we need it to live.“
Again, I concede that you are correct, we DO need the planet earth to survive. In your original statement you also said “Plus: Aren’t the planets (natural and artificial) green and arable areas overburdened enough to be additionally consumed by senseless, self-sustaining, U.S. American “Life-digesting machines”?
(Shouldn’t we first set free a few of these robots in the U.S.A.‘s best preserved landscapes themselves?)”. Since I am curious, just what is the population density for your country?
    France 279 per square mile
    Spain 229 per square mile
    Germany 237 per square Km
    Etc…
In America it is 85 per square mile. You APPEAR to be speaking out in defense of the planet, how about this. You get your own countries problems fixed BEFORE you try to tell us how to fix ours. WHY can’t you “Europeans” get YOUR problems fixed instead of complaining about everything we do? Are you just upset that we HAVE done a better job of taking care of the environment than you have? Are you upset that we HAVE learned to Reduce, reuse and recycle better than you have? Are you upset that we have a MUCH better standard of living than you do? Or is it that you are just upset that WE, “the evil americans” have a MUCH better standard of living than you do? AND BEFORE you ask, YES, I have been to Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
You state, “3) Your “peaceful herbivores” have digestive bacteria that break down long chains of hydro-carb molecules (that compose straw, fibres and other cellulose) into short = highly energetic (“explosive”) molecules (like glucose, whose energy is stored in our A.T.P.). American think / speak) ?“
As I said earlier “While the idea of a “Self Sustaining” drone vehicle of this nature DOES raise concerns, the TECHNOLOGY involved in its creation is interesting. Bio Fuel that can be picked up off the ground has potential. If the bags that I put grass clippings in could power my car or my home, I would say that it has potential. If the leaves I rake up every year can fuel my lawnmower, THAT has potential.” That should make a planet protector happy, this is another example of potential technology used to reduce the harm to the planet. I AM NOT ADVOCATING THE DRONE VEHICLE, I am merely pointing out the POTENTIAL benefits of the devices power supply.
And Finally, you had this to say“4) I said it before: On the long run, the biggest, most existential threat to the U.S.A. isn’t some Oriental country or the “Axis of Evil” of this season, it’s the way you U.S. Americans yourselves drift mentally, psychologically hopelessly apart from normal Humans. I can see it coming, you don’t. Three prime examples: Electing & even RE-electing W …??! Too scared to pronounce the obvious Truth about 11 / 9 ? Speculating with an unprovoked nuclear first strike against Russia???? Etc. . Don’t laugh, weep“
Hmmm So you hate GEORGE W. BUSH, too bad some of us liked the mans policies. Just how is he relevant to your comments about US inventions and the environment? or is this just another European attack on our Government?
And the OBVIOUS truth about 9/11? PLEASE elighten me. Oh, let me guess, we should bend over backward to APPEASE the militant muslims, like Europe? Perhaps we should pay them to leave us alone, like Europe. Or MAYBE we should just convert to the MUSLIM religon, like …The Europeans. PLEASE tell me that you people aren’t that foolish? PLEASE tell me we WON’T have to save your countries AGAIN!
Speculation about Nuclear war with Russia, YEP WE DID that and we still do it. Thanks to Europeans and Asians we are now speculating about Nuclear war with Iran, Pakistan, India, North Korea.…. Etcetera. AND yes, BEFORE you get all indignant and say “America built and used the Nuke first” you are right, WE did. If if comes down to it, I PRAY TO GOD (not Allah) THAT WE WILL AGAIN if it is required! And yes, the prospect scares the hell out of me.
I do weep, I weep for the short sighted people in Europe who REFUSE to learn from their past and continue to make the same mistakes that caused the last 2 world wars. America isn’t a perfect country, we make mistakes, the difference between our countries is that we tend NOT to make the same mistake twice.

You couldn’t possibly be more right about that. Just look at South Africa and Australia, who never received any (French or other) military aid against perfidious Albion: Today, in the 21st Century, they’re still “subjects to the Queen” instead of Democracies, like the British themselves, no kidding!
(I never said that the U.S.A. were an exemplary Democracy, though…)
P.S.: Still, there is “something” seriously wrong with Wikipedia’s “Quality-of-Life Index”: Countries like Austria (nr. 20 on that list) and Germany (nr. 26 on that list) DO NOT have a worse quality of life than for example a banana republic like “Portugal” (nr. 19) .
And why on Earth is Canada (nr.14) one place BEHIND the U.S.A. (nr. 13, of course) as well, instead of 50 places ahead of the U.S.A.?! Etc.

Norway?! Beautiful country, been there several times. Parlimentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, and the King rules until he dies. And this king thing, hows that working out for you?
Lets see if I remember my history correctly. Yes France did supply powder and ammunition to america (unless my memory is going too, I think we paid almost $1 million dollars for a shipload)and yes, France did “accomodate” american frigates on the high seas. As I recall France did send about 6000 soldiers to fight with us, but they didn’t win a war and give us back our country. I concede also that their Navy was busy destroying British shipping, still, not the same as losing your country and having some one else give it back.
Now, back to the original topic.
Could the power cell from this machine be adapted to power say an electrical generator? A Car? Etc… I’m sure that there is more to it, but it sounds like you just drop in some Bio-Mass and the thing powers this robot. How much power does it produce? Besides the “EATR”, what other applications has the company developed for the use of the power cell?
