“Fastest Kettle in the World”

steam car.jpg

This just came across the wires from the UK’s Western Mail:

A British-built steam supercar broke a 103-year-old world land speed record for steam-powered vehicles in the United States yesterday.

The 25ft-long British Steam Car — nicknamed the “fastest kettle in the world” — reached an average speed of 139.843mph on two runs over a measured mile at the Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The timing beat the previous record of 127mph set by American
Fred Marriott in a Stanley steam car at the Daytona Beach Road
Course in 1906.

Record officials recognize a land speed record as the average
speed of two passes made across the same measured distance in opposing directions within 60 minutes of each other
.

Wow … that’s moving out. Can Steam NASCAR be far behind?

The real question is: If Stanley threw on some aero shells on his steamer would it be faster than this new record?

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but 100+ years of holding a record using an antiquated form of tech, and only just now is someone else making it a few MPH above that? That is what is known as an Epic Fail.

@aflint/st6ng: this is what the record car looked like in 1907:

Somewhat more sophisticated than what you might expect. Still a bit lousy to drive the old record out of the books, though.

british traditonal overexpensive steam cars are made for the old records not for boiling american fast food!

As a Brit i find this slightly embarrassing. The new record only managed to shave a few MPH off the old. Had Stanley had suitable aerodynamics his car would have undoubtably been faster.
With todays tech i would expect the speed to have been 200mph plus…
