The boys from DoD Buzz are all over the Air Force Association’s 2009 annual conference outside DC for the next few days and I thought I’d preview one of the videos they shot.
Bryant Jordan shot a quick floor video of Aurora Flight Sciences’ Scate, or what we like to call the “drone in a bag.”
It looks like a pliable, foldable mini-drone that is perfect for urban reconnaissance and small unit employment.
I’m sure Bryant will have a post on this at DoD Buzz, but for now, I thought I’d post the video for your enjoyment.
Be sure to keep a close eye on DoD Buzz for more technology innovations and policy pronouncements at this year’s AFA.

I want one!
Test this over US Mex border alone & in Afganistan, Iraq.
Launch from naval ships, air launch from C17, C130, C5, C141, & Hand launch Micro drones.
Produce this.
Expand this.
Maybe something small enough, like a grenade? With a parachute for sustained flight?
This kind of UAV is too small for the US/Mexico border. Need bigger ones with more capability. Put a few Global Hawks on the border.
If we could push UAVs like this to squad or platoon level that would be nice. Even a little screen about the size of a regular GPS to show video would be very useful.
How about a miniature Kamakaze in a bag? An inexpensive precision guided munition for small unit deployment?
I agree w/ Charles. having UAV’s at platoon, even sqaud level would give our guys a leg up. Wouldn’t you like to know wats going on in the next ridge? Or a compound? We are really shortchanging our troops. The incident with the Marines not getting fires when needed is almost criminal. Like to hear the desk jockey who denied that request explain it to the families. Damn..
Get more Wasp and Raven UAVs into Afghanistan now!
