Naval Academy Flight Evals

Happy Christmas Eve folks.

I thought I’d pass along to you a video we found deep in the Military.com archives. Give it a look before you cut out early today from the grind.

This is rare archival footage of preliminary flight evaluations for the US Naval Academy class of 1982. We did some video forensics here and we’re pretty sure we’re seeing Midshipman 4th Class Edward Carroll’s very first go at becoming a Naval Aviator.

We need some more eyeballs on this thing to be sure, so give it a very close look and let us know if you think this is the man himself.

Whoever it is, darn nice flying, though!

Merry Christmas everyone…

And exactly WHO is Edward Carroll? No disrespect intended here, as I'm sure he was a very fine fellow, but you speak of him as if he were someone famous, so maybe you can explain that…

He was my flight instructor in flight school! He is really the best there was until he lost his wife three years ago. Never been the same since!

No it was a flight evaluation. Behind all the pomp is the acid test, flying drunk. You ace it if youre sober by the time you get out of the plane, i think.

Did it surprise you? Pilots have to be ready for anything, ANYTHING.

Imagine, ol wang ming ling spikes yer eggnog with some weapons grade booze and all you have for your getaway is a small plane. What would YOU do? Huh?

Looks like Clark Griswald's cousin Eddy who later popularized the expression 'Up YOUR's!"

feh, let's see him do it in an f18…or even a stearman. After 4 double rye on the rocks I wouldn't try it on FSX, much less with a real one…
