It doesn't provide jobs, it just keeps a line open and prevents losses out of the F-16 line. Then again, the F-16 line wasn't likely to go anywhere any time soon.

The only serious deterrent for Taiwan is nuclear weapons, or "strategic ambiguity". Taiwan could buy some Dolphins from Germany and equip them with cruise missiles if they cared, but they don't. The businessmen basically only see dollar bills and the potential of sweatshops in the free trade areas, and the government sees peace with China as the first step to continued political existence and greater political stability (and maybe in some circles, stripping down the military, ornerous conscription and increased pork).

Another point is that these bastards in China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran have armed every despot, dictator, terrorist, Communist Guerilla around the world for decades, flooding it with millions of AKs, AA, Tanks, carriers... Selling 66 fighters to our ally seems appropriate in this light.

The building and sale of 66 high tech fighters to an ally would provide jobs and investment in American firms. Plus, whether it stops a ballistic attack is besides the point. Taiwan WANTS them, we have them, they are a detterent regardless of the outcome, so what is the problem? The question of whether 66 fighters makes Taiwan safe from being gobbled by China is a rather inane one. They might even help bide time till we can irradiate the entire Chinese countryside, which is the appropriate threat against as Communist country that steals our tech, hax our networks and is our ideological enemy.

I'd say, we are already edgy on China's military modernization, why not sell Taiwan what it needs to balance the power in that part of the world. Or just sell them the blue prints.

If China took any actions against Okinawa that of course would be a game changer and would automatically bring Japan and the United States into the equation. It is un;likely that either the UShttp://www.goodpuma.com or Japan would invade China but significant parts of it's national infrastructure, military and economy would be destroyed in several different ways.

It budget time for the Fed againhttp://www.buy-supra-shoes.org and Rand is cheering for it's oldest and main client the USAF.
